About Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a rugged island located southeast of mainland Bali, accessible by a 30-45 minute speedboat ride from Sanur. Known for its dramatic cliff formations, pristine beaches, and incredible marine life, it has become one of Bali's most Instagram-famous destinations.

The island offers some of the best snorkeling and diving in the region, with opportunities to swim alongside manta rays and explore vibrant coral reefs.

Getting There

Fast boats depart from Sanur Beach multiple times daily. The journey takes 30-45 minutes. Book in advance during peak season.

Getting Around Nusa Penida

Boats from Sanur arrive at several harbours on the north coast, including Toyapakeh, Banjar Nyuh and Sampalan. The island's roads are steep, narrow and in places badly potholed, so unless you are an experienced rider, hire a car with a driver rather than a scooter. Most day tours cover the west-coast highlights of Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong, plus Crystal Bay.

Safety Tips

The path down to Kelingking Beach is very steep and takes 30 to 45 minutes each way. Wear proper shoes and avoid it after rain.
Angel's Billabong can be dangerous when waves wash over the rock pool. Only swim at low tide on calm days.
Currents around the island are strong; snorkel and dive with licensed operators.
Carry cash for parking and entrance fees, and expect a small regional levy for visitors.

Day Trip or Overnight?

A day trip is enough to see the main viewpoints, but it is long and rushed. Staying a night or two lets you visit the quieter east coast, including Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach and the Thousand Islands viewpoint, and see the famous cliffs before the day-trip crowds arrive.
